The Allure of Freedom

Chicken Lessons

We let 7 of our chickens out today to enjoy the feast of crickets and grasshoppers that have taken over. It was midday and the dogs were inside napping in the cool air. Predators stay away in the daylight, but lurk in the dark. After some time, Adriel and I started catching them one by one. 4 of them grew up with us and easily let us pick them up. They trust us. They were easy to get back up. We managed to wrangle two of the others back in the pen and went on with our day.

We went back out later and there was another chicken just out enjoying herself. I thought I had let 6 out, but it was 7. It didn’t take a second for the dogs to see her too and off they went. She managed to get away, but it sure frightened her. I got the dogs away and then began the multi-hour process of trying to catch her.

You see, I know that their pen provides refuge and safety. I know the dangers that exist with her staying out. But she doesn’t. After a couple hours of chasing through overgrown pens and barns, I gave up. Instead of trusting me, she chose to run. Instead of submitting to her owner that feeds, provides treats and water, and makes sure they have everything they need, she chose to run.

My heart aches for her tonight. And I hope she survives, but I can’t force her to trust me. No matter how much I want good for her, unless she believes me, then she will run to everything else that feels better or more pleasant.. regardless of the reality.

I think God aches for us when He knows that He has such protection and goodness for us, yet we choose to run from Him. We run to so many things instead of to the arms of a gentle and kind Savior. So maybe the pen seems small and there’s too much going on.. but maybe it’s protecting you from the wolves.

Update: The chicken was found and has been returned to her home. She was very excited to get in that door! Turns out refuge is much better than the real world.

Restoration

ἀποκατάστασις
apokatástasis

“whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time. “

 Acts 3:21

Restoration: “The verb from which it is derived occurs eight times. It means properly "to restore a thing to its former situation," as restoring a "strained" or "dislocated" limb to its former soundness. Hence, it is used to restore, or to heal, in the New Testament: Matthew 12:13, "And it (the hand) was restored whole as the other";Mark 3:5; Luke 6:10. And hence, it is applied to the preparation or fitness for the coming of the Messiah which was to attend the preaching of John in the character of Elias, Matthew 17:11; Mark 9:12. Thus, in Josephus (Antiq., Mark 2:3,Mark 2:8), the word is used to denote the return of the Jews from the captivity of Babylon, and their restoration to their former state and privileges.”

-Notes on the Bible by Albert Barnes [1834] -

The Process

Years ago I traveled home to spend a little time with my parents.  One of my goals for the trip was to teach my dad how to restore furniture.  The dresser in the pictures was our project.  An old, blue dresser that was of no value as it was in its broken down condition.  We headed to the local hardware store and picked up the needed supplies and soon after began to work on it.

Step 1: Clean off all the loose dirt.  This didn’t take long, but in order for step 2 to be efficient, it  was necessary.  All the excess stuff was wiped away, all the things that are visible for anyone to see. The cobwebs, hornets nests, and layers of dirt… all wiped away.

Step 2: Apply a layer of paint stripper.  It needs to sit there for a bit, up to 20 minutes in some cases.  The chemicals begin to break through the toughness of the paint.  The top layer of paint begins to bubble up, and after a set amount of time, a scraper is used to take off the loosened paint.  As you run a scraper across the surface of the wood, the paint that is loose comes off pretty easily.  Were it not for the chemicals though, the process would be much harder.

Step 3: Repeating step 2.  Another layer of paint stripper to get through the stubborn paint.  To really focus on those areas that refuse to removed.  Wait for the chemicals to do their job in breaking down the paint and then scrap it away leaving raw wood exposed.  This can be very dangerous for wood if left at this stage. Left exposed, it becomes susceptible to warping caused by temperatures or the environment around it.

Step 4: Sanding.  Using course sandpaper, one must smooth out the roughness of the wood and remove any leftover paint.  The scrubbing, so to say, of the wood takes away any pieces that are not in line with the what is desired.  Corners and edges are smoothed, and sides and faces are evened out.  After a wipe down, the prep portion is complete.

Step 5:  Staining.  This step brings out the natural beauty of the wood.  A wood stain soaks into the wood particles and brings it to life.  The wood is still the same wood, but the stain allows it to be seen as the masterpiece it is.  The difference is instantly noticeable.  The stain not only colors the wood and brings out the natural grains in it, but it treats the wood in order to protect it.
Unlike paint, the stain soaks into the very fibers of the wood and
doesn't just cover it up.

Step 6:  The finishing coat.  It is at this stage where the project can be painted with a gloss, stain, or other type of finishing product depending on how you want the outcome to be.  These products seal in the wood to protect it from being harmed in anyway.  They reduce the amount of scratches to the actual wood, keep it from being harmed by water or temperature changes, and make it usable long term.  Once this dries, the project is complete and ready to be used.

How I hope you see the spiritual application in these steps.  As believers, we initially have the dirt wiped from us and those outward sins decrease.  Next comes layers of sin that we hold closer to use that He must penetrate and remove. Then He moves even further in our hearts to remove pieces that aren't of Him.  Sanding of our hearts take place as He shapes us into His image and smooth out our rough spots.  His Spirit penetrates our hearts and lives so that He brings out the beauty of grace in us.  We are sealed, protected, and preserved for Him and by Him.  A human restoration project… Salvation and sanctification. Sometimes we go through these steps in varying order in the processes of stripping and sanding through sanctification, yet the finished product is always about becoming more like Christ.  It’s painful at times.  No one enjoys having pieces of their fleshly desires scrapped away.  We don’t enjoy deeper sins being brought to the surface and then dealt with.  The finish product though, is the hope that we draw from in those painful moments of scrapping.  The verse in Acts 3, talks about a final restoration.  One in which Christ returns as the rightful King and restores all to what it was supposed to be.  The day when all will be put back in place.  What a glorious hope that we have awaiting.  As you walk through the next few days, my prayer is that we would seek restoration in your life.  Let us submit ourselves to the Master Carpenter and trust His hand in restoring us.

Transplants

If you've ever spent anytime studying about transplants, you know that there is a high chance of the body rejecting the new organ.  Regardless of how "perfect" the organ may be, there is a still a chance that it just will not work properly in the person it is being transplanted into.  Researchers have been working on a new method and I was fascinated by it.  The heart on the right is called a, "Ghost Heart." To simplify what happens, they take a heart, often a pig's heart, and soak it in a solution that washes away the cells.  This leaves only a protein type shell of a heart.  The "clean heart," is then injected with blood or bone-marrow stem cells from the person who will receive this new heart.  The heart is then put in a machine, a bioreactor, that is connected to artificial lungs which pump oxygen and blood into the heart.  With the breath coming into it, the heart begins to come to life. It can then be transplanted into the patient without the body rejecting it.  This procedure is not yet in place, as there are some things that still need to be worked out, but it's definitely in process and they see it being reality within the next decade where it will save thousands of lives.

I couldn't help but see the spiritual application while reading about this "ghost heart."  For a body to receive a clean heart, it must be willing to give up it's own, dying one. The diseased ridden heart is replaced with a pure one that is living and gives life.  The very thing that Christ offers us in salvation.  He takes our diseased, sin-ridden heart and replaces it with a pure one.  One that was purified and sanctified in His cleansing blood washes our sins away. The body accepts this new heart and comes to life due to the living organ that is doing it's work inside.  It affects everything and changes the person from one who was dying, to one who can now live.
Have you allowed Christ to perform a transplant giving you a new, clean, living heart?

Psalm 51:

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;

according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight,

so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Let me hear joy and gladness;let the bones that you have broken rejoice.

Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation,

and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.

O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem;

then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt

offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
